LEAGUE

The Ultimate Football League 2 is a 30 team head-to-head league that will employ a full financial model. The games will be played using Front Page Sports Pro Football ’98 with the 1.08 patch and the "stock" plays provided by the VPNFL group. Player ratings and statistics have been recreated in order to help player accuracy but were done so utilizing VPNFL methodology. The league will begin it’s first season simulating NFL 1995 rosters in order to provide a more accuracy pool of rookies and in order to insure league longevity. The basis of the league is simple: to provide the most complete and competitive football experience possible for all of it’s owners.

COMMISSIONER

The league will be commissioned by Scott "Longshot" Taylor. Basic duties will include being responsible for file management, conducting all drafts, reviewing and approving all trades, policing team salary caps and the general progress of the "football week". Other (not so nice) duties will include making judgements on game discrepancies, maintaining full ownership in the league and enforcing league rules.

OWNERS

Owners are responsible for every facet of team management and take sole responsibility of everything that entails. All coaches are expected to know this set of basic directives in addition to the more detailed league rules. Owners are expected to fully participate, to play their games each week, to control their team’s salary, to manage their team’s roster and to work together with everyone else to make the league a fun experience. Also, owners are expected to understand how to play online, how to recover from crashes and how to transfer league files appropriately.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

We suggest having a Pentium computer with at least a 33.6k modem. Additionally, the following software is required to be installed on your system:

  • Front Page Sports Football ’98 (duh) patched to version 1.08
  • ICQ (and your number is to be posted on your team page)
  • ITC (for training your players)
  • RMUPDATE (for roster moves week to week)
  • AGENT (for managing your team salaries)
  • PPPManag (for managing your week to week gameplans)
  • VPNFL (these are the plays we’ll be using)
  • 3-4patch (unzip into the 3-4 directory of VPNFL)
  • 4-3patch (unzip into the 4-2 directory of VPNFL)
  • Passpatch (unzip into the pass directory of VPNFL)
  • TS-patch (unzip into the special teams directory of VPNFL)
  • UFL2 files (install in FBPro98 directory)
SYSTEM SETUP

The following is how you should modify your current FBPro98 in order to play in the UFL2.

  • In the setup.ini file located in /Sierra/FBPro98 you should insert a line at the bottom of the [OVERALL] section (put cursor at the end of the DefaultTeam line and hit enter) that reads "CDNeeded=No". This isn’t really a requirement more than it is a convenience.
  • You should extract the VPNFL file into c: drive (or whatever your football drive is). If this is done correctly the .zip file will automatically create a folder called VPNFL inside the FBPro98 folder.
  • Extract the 4 VPNFL patches into the appropriate VPNFL folder. There will be folders under Sierra/FBPro98/VPNFL that match up to each patch (with TS being special teams).
  • The utility programs can either be put into FBPro98 or in a separate folder if you wish, but you should have ITC, RMUPDATE, AGENT and PPPManag all installed on your system.
  • The league files should be maintained in the FBPro98 directory.
Now go into FBPro98 and set up your league and team. This is done by starting the game… go to OPTIONS… in the upper left hand corner is a button that says "Default League"… press that and then slide down the directory until you see UFL2…. Select it and hit OK. Directly below the league button is the "Default Team" button… press that and then select your UFL2 team that you’ve been assigned to. Now in the lower right hit "Accept" to save your new settings.
Always be sure that your team is set up to use custom plays. In the main menu, go to GAME TYPE and select LEAGUE from the sub-menu. Click on the TEAM INFO button with the helmet icon and select SETTINGS from the sub-menu. From the buttons at the bottom of the screen, click on TEAM PROFILE. At the top of the profile, underneath the words PROFILE SELECTION CRITERIA, click on the round button for COMPUTER PROFILE. This team will now run custom gameplans

TRADES

Trades will all be handled via the ultimatefootball.com interface. One coach will put in his "suggestion" for a trade… notification will be emailed to the coach he is making his offer too… the coach then being made the offer may either go to the site and decline, send back a counter-offer or accept. Once the second coach accepts the trade is then forwarded via email to the draft committee (which may be just the commissioner or may include others, this has yet to be determined). They will then go to the site and either approve or reject the proposed trade… the whole time this is all viewable by the league in general to know what’s going on. Once all the necessary approvals are in place the online league files will be updated and the trade will be moved to the "approved trades" section of the site. (Keep in mind the time necessary to complete a full trade… most of the ground work should be done by the coaches in chat, however, it will still take awhile for a trade to go through. That means, don’t wait for the last minute to try and make a trade.) Trade guidelines:

  • Draft picks may only be traded one season ahead.
  • Teams must maintain their own salary cap. If a team makes trades that force them over the salary cap, all newly acquired players will sit out that week (and every other week until the team gets under the cap). If this forces the team to not meet the roster requirements then the trades may be reversed at the discretion of the commissioner.
  • ALL trades are subject to review by a) trade committee and/or b) commissioner. While an explanation will be given to the coaches, any trade viewed as damaging to either a team or the league as a whole will be reversed immediately.
  • Salary cap money may not be traded.
  • All trades are subject to the rules governing contracts, meaning if you pick up a player then you are picking up his contract. Be sure to read over the AGENT documentation!!
ROSTER MOVES

Roster moves will be the responsibility of the team’s respective GM. All roster moves will be handled using RMUPDAT. Read the program’s documentation and familiarize yourself with how it works. This is an important part of handling your team. Also be sure to remember the league schedule. All roster move files are due IN THE COMMISSIONER’S MAILBOX by 6pmPST on Wednesday. Do not wait until the last minute or your roster moves may not be made for you! Also be sure that you conform to the roster requirements at all times… the position requirements shown under the League Rules are the number of players that must be available to take the field at all times regardless of injury!!

TRAINING

All training will be handled using the ITC program. Please read the necessary documentation and familiarize yourself with the program. The boundaries for training in the UFL2 will be min 5% and max 50%.

TEAM REQUIREMENTS

Everyone will be required to have the following players on their team and active for play every week. If someone is unavailable due to injury for the remainder of the season then you will be required to either trade for or pick up that position via free agency. If this means you need to cut someone, then you are going to need to cut someone. Listed below are a total of 45 players… you are required to carry the team minimum of 46 players to start the year.

QB – 2 DE - 4

HB – 3 DT - 3

FB – 2 LB - 6

TE – 2 S - 4

WR – 5 CB - 4

C – 2 P - 1

G – 3

T – 3

K – 1

FREE AGENTS

Teams are allowed to pick up 2 free agents per play week from the week before league play to the last week of the regular season. Bids will be processed on Monday night. If there is a conflict involving two teams wanting the same player, preference will go to that team with a higher initial draft seating (however, once the tie is broken the winning team will then drop down to #30 in terms of preference). If a team is not allowed to pick up a free agent due to losing a tie, they will have until Tuesday at 6pm to place another request. The team must end under the salary cap after the acquisition of their new free agent, therefore cutting players may be involved. There is no maximum to the number of players that may be cut.

SALARIES

The team salary cap is currently set at $80,000,000 dollars. You will be required to carry the league minimum 46 players. If at any time you do not fit under the cap before your league game, the commissioner will be forced to cut a player for you. In order to be impartial, the commissioner will simply find out how much over the cap you are and cut the single player that puts you back in line. Do what you need to do to keep track of where you sit at all times! The league will try and provide up to date cap information throughout the week, however, cap management is still your responsibility. So if you are only 300K over, you’ll probably just lose some backup OL guy… if you leave yourself 4mil over for some reason, you may just lose your star QB.

PLAY TRANSFERS

So let’s just get this right out on the table. The single most little fragile portion of this league is that fact that we are going to a different type of "stock" than we are used to. What we pick up in play intelligence and usefulness, we give back in stability. Plays are going to transfer every single down. It’s quick and painless and soon enough you’ll hardly notice it… however it brings up the dreaded "But how do you know is someone changed the play on their side?" question. Let’s get it out on the table now… no, there is no good answer. If you are a computer inclined person there is something that you can make work… we’ll be playing with the game "VCR" recording every play, if something comes up that looks like cheating you’d have to drop to the Windows Explorer (which means you have to be playing in window mode in the first place to even be able to do that) and copy the FBPlay~ file after you’ve gone back to the play call screen… and you’ll also have to note the time in the game so that when you make your accusation you can have the commish look on the opponent’s play.log to match up the play you copied with what it is supposed to be in his playbook. OK, a rather painful system but the fact is that folks can be caught… I hate having to write that stuff out but everyone always insists like the entire league is full of cheaters or something "Oh it’s not that I think anyone will, but…" Whatever, so now I’ve written it. Here’s my little system… a) cheat and not only will you get nuked from this league but there will be 29 people that will make a nice effort to make sure you are nuked from every other online activity in existence to the point that you’ll be changing your ICQ and email addresses… and b) odds are you’ll get away with it a few times before being popped, but on the other hand, you don’t have to be actually caught around here guys, after enough people question you it’s just about as good… we aren’t the court system, in case you haven’t noticed… league’s a bit more like the western mob kinda justice… right or wrong, that’s just the way life is… so you might want to go out of your way to be a little helpful to folks because we all need to work together and keep the game integrity intact… if a guy is questioning something, don’t be a jerk about it, help explain it to him so he knows he got burnt and doesn’t wander off and right me this flaming letter about how you cheated. Take this to heart folks… cheating is considered the ultimate sin around here. Accusing and being accused of cheating is serious… don’t go accusing someone unless you are serious about what you are saying.
